Camping 101

Had it with the “rat race”? Got time off but not much cash to spend? Losing touch with your family? Sounds like an old-fashioned campout is just what you need.

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time getting reacquainted with your family. Great family camping getaways are easy to plan and inexpensive vacation options. Nature is everywhere, so you don’t need to travel far for your camping trip. You can journey to a national park, drive to a local campground, or pitch a tent in your own backyard.

Camping 101 begins with the planning. This part of the trip is half the fun. Call a family meeting to decide where you’d like to go. Depending on your budget, you can plan to load up the trunk with tents and sleeping bags, pull a camper or drive an RV. The point is to treat your family to an unforgettable outdoor adventure, so it doesn’t matter how you plan to camp or where you intend to go.

If you are new to the camping experience, it’s probably a good idea to start out slow. Book a weekend campsite to get the feel for the camping lifestyle. Get used to cooking over a wood fire and sharing your space with wildlife, before you venture too far away from the comforts of home. Many campgrounds provide fun activities like pools, playgrounds, fishing or recreational boating, so check your local listings to see what adventures lie ahead.

Once your kids (and you) recover from the shock of having no television or Internet access, you’ll all have an eye-opening experience. You’ll realize the nature is fun. Camping opens the doors to a world of new activities, like swimming, rock diving, boating, fishing, hiking, catching butterflies, searching for fossils, and going wherever your energy level and imagination can take you. Campgrounds and remote parks are all filled with wonderful ways to enjoy the best nature has to offer. If you want to boat or water ski, many campsites offer these and other items for rent.

Don’t expect to bring along your everyday dinnerware and automatic coffeepot for your campout. Remember, you will be roughing it, so pack accordingly. Bring plastic dishes and cutlery that can be washed and reused, but won’t break in transit. Make sure you have enough sleeping bags, pillows and extra clothes. Pack the food you’ll need, plus a little extra, and keep a supply of ice on hand for perishables like meat and dairy. If you’re bringing tins of beans, remember a manual can opener or pack your Swiss army knife. If you’re not sure what to bring, ask an associate at your local sporting store to help you choose your camping needs. Call on friends who like to camp, and ask them for advice.

Just like your old scoutmaster used to say, “Always be prepared”. Make a list and check it three times before you leave on your camping trip. Make sure that there is enough food and fresh water for everyone. Bring food that can be easily prepared on your campsite. Pack clothing for all kinds of weather. Don’t forget sunscreen, bug spray and hygiene items. Toilet paper and paper towels are absolute necessities. Bring along some soap and toothpaste, but leave the hair gel and makeup at home. Mother Nature doesn’t care what you look like. She just wants you to enjoy your stay.

Is Skiing Good For You?

At last, solid proof for what we’ve long suspected: skiing and snowboarding are good for you. And that’s not just because they’re both great fun and put a smile on your face but because this also improves our health, happiness, red blood cell count and makes us live longer. The evidence has always been there for us to see: the bearded septuagenarian bounding past you for the fifteenth time as you struggle down your first run of the day. Here’s his secret…

Sunlight.
Are you SAD? 1 in 50 people in the UK suffer from seasonal affective disorder which is a type of depression which commonly occurs during the winter months when the days are shorter. You travel to and from work in the dark, are cooped up in the office all day, and levels of serotonin, the brain’s natural mood lifter, drop. SADs can vary from mild winter blues to a more severe form where people can’t function in the winter without treatment. So get treatment and get up on the mountain. You may get depressed about the cost of a beer on the slopes, but that’s not quite the same thing.

Adrenalin.
We’re all just animals, obviously some creationists may disagree, but we need to exercise our fight or flight responses. What safer, or better, way of doing this than searching out the steepest black run you can find, or something just a little bit beyond your normal comfort zone. The adrenalin surge will activate the beta receptors in your nervous system causing your heart to beat faster and increasing air to the lungs. This stimulates the brain, and the endorphin rush of relief when it’s over, will make you feel like a super human after every run. You can then undo the good work done by celebrating with some après ski in the bar afterwards.

Altitude.
Can the news get any better? Just being at altitude can make you thin, fit and desirable – at least the first two are true. A couple of years ago the Austrian Moderate Altitude Study was carried out. Men who were overweight and suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol were prescribed walks at an altitude of between  1400m and 2000M. The result? Exercise at altitude improves heart function and circulation, lowers blood pressure and burns calories. There was also an increased number of young red blood cells. So, as far as the theory goes, skiing rocks and just getting off at the top of the Aiguille du Midi (3842m) could add years to your life.

Fresh Air.
Spending time in the great outdoors helps to prevent disease and boost recovery. You can avoid the pretty nasty particles which float around in the urban air. According to some Harvard boffins in their Six Cities 1993 study those people living in the most polluted cities have a 26% greater risk of dying young than those in the cleanest. So give yourself a break from the congested traffic and polluted air and breath in that fresh, crisp, revitalising mountain air.

Learning.
Learning is good for us. Your parents told you so and they were right, but they and you need to heed that advice. Learning new skills later in life can slow down the onset of dementia. Attempting challenges such as learning a foreign language – which you can practice at the bar – or new skills, such as skiing, will reduce the risk of getting age related symptoms and diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

So what are you waiting for? Skiing is not only great fun but also scientifically proven to be good for you. Now that surely is an unbeatable combination.

Sports Anthems

In between plays and during a timeout or with a score of some kind, stadiums who host sporting events have longed turned to popular music to get the crowd energized or to celebrate for the home team. Some players even have specific songs that are played when they make an appearance or great play. Music also provides an interlude and break from a baseball game when a stadium usually plays “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” for the seventh inning stretch. Let’s explore some of the more popular “energy songs” and anthems that are part of the sports landscape.

The group “Steam” has a song that is played at many sporting events usually when the home team has secured a victory or if a player gets tossed from the game. The taunting “Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye” adds insult to injury for the losing team. The song, officially named “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” was released in 1969 and spent two weeks at the number one position on the American Billboard top 40. Unfortunately, this is the only hit Steam could muster.

Glam-rocker Gary Glitter’s instrumental part of “Rock And Roll Part 2″ has become a national sports anthem and is sometimes referred to as the “Hey Song” because the word fits so conveniently into the beat. A snippet of the song could be heard all across the land during timeouts or scores and as a rallying cheer. But the NFL has banned stadiums from playing the song because of Gary Glitter’s arrest and conviction of child molestation in Vietnam, forcing many teams to find a suitable substitute.

Freddie Mercury and Queen actually have three songs that I have heard. The boastful “We Are The Champions” is played appropriately at championship ceremonies or to taunt an opposing team. “We Will Rock You” is a superb song snippet that instigates crowd reaction and participation and “Another Bites The Dust” has been played after an opposing player has struck out or been tossed from the game.

The ever popular “Bang On The Drum All Day,” by Todd Rundgren, is a song I have heard at Lambeau Field, home of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. The Packers use an instrumental snippet of the song when a Packer scores a touchdown and performs the “Lambeau Leap” in celebration.

The Rolling Stones have also chipped in and provide a rallying call for teams with the song “Start Me Up,” usually played right before kickoffs. Other popular song snippets that you can hear played at sports venues are the Romantic’s infectious“What I Like About You,” “Unbelievable” by EMF and “Takin’ Care Of Business” by arena rockers Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO).

I am not sure that the writers of these songs had this in mind when they composed the songs, but an infectious beat and a rousing snippet are sometimes all that is needed to energize a crowd and get them more interested in a sporting event. This is a union that will go on forever.

Sports Apparel Online

Getting in shape is much easier when you have the appropriate sports apparel to wear. With so many online resources, you can now find almost any type of clothing for fitness and exercise, running, playing sports games, etc.

Many of these items can be found online at a sports shopping mall in a variety of brand names such as NBA, NFL, NASCAR and NCAA, and at a reasonable price. Here’s a quick guide to sports apparel, and how to choose the clothing and accessories that are right for you.

Apparel for Playing Sports (Sports Jerseys-Apparel, etc.)

When ordering items such as sports jerseys or other apparel for yourself or your team, keep in mind that the fit should be comfortable and the materials should be flexible. During any active game such as football, basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball, etc., there will be lots of arm and leg movement. Be sure to order the appropriate sizes and allow for a little moving room. Don’t order items too big because the clothing could be a hindrance if it’s too baggy. Spandex materials are usually popular choices for these types of sports.

Track and Running Shoes

If you’re involved in track at school or in the professional realm, the main focus should be on your running shoes. Choose shoes that fit snug, but comfortably. The shoes should not slide on your heel, nor should they hurt your toes after wearing them for an hour or two. Be sure the shoes provide adequate support for your heels and arches. Also, buy running shoes that feel lightweight on your feet while running. Check to make sure the shoes have good treads on the bottom. Your running shoes should be a help, not a hindrance.

Fitness Training and Gym Workouts

At the gym, or during fitness training, buy sports clothing according to the type of exercises you will perform. For instance, wear pants that fit snugly around the legs if doing leg exercises, especially on an exercise bike or similar equipment. Loose-fitting pants could get caught in the machinery and cause injury.

For aerobic-style fitness training, wear leotards with leggings, bike shorts and a jog top. Or, wear a snug-fitting t-shirt with boxer-style shorts. Don’t wear clothing that’s baggy, as it will hinder your body’s movement. For shoes, wear aerobic shoes if possible, but avoid running shoes with heavy treads.

Sports Swimwear

If swimming in competitions, choose a bathing suit that promotes speed and smooth swimming. There are special types of swimsuits that have “vertical line” designs in the material to channel water away from the body. Competition swimwear should be slick, comfortable, and allow for easy body movement.

To find these types of unique sportswear items used to be difficult – especially for those living in a small town with limited retailers. But nowadays, you can shop for all types of sports clothing and fitness apparel from your own home computer any time of the day or week.

Online sports shopping malls offer all types of sports clothing, fitness wear, athletic supplies, sporting goods-sports equipment, sports memorabilia, and more. And, you can usually get a great price for these items online. Use the tips above to dress for sports success!

Sports Memorabilia Appraisals

When you invest in sports memorabilia, you often don’t realize how much the value can climb by the time you choose to sell. Likewise, it could decrease in value as well.

Appraisal is a must for the serious sports collector. People have been sorely disappointed because they didn’t get their items appraised for value and then sold them for a fraction of their worth.

Some places to check for appraisals for sports memorabilia include:

1.) All Authentic Sports Memorabilia-professionals who can provide references and offer instant appraisals

2.) Vintage Sports Memorabilia Appraisals-has a sports artifacts library for thousands of vintage sports items, prefers email requests limited to two items, nothing newer than 1980.

3.) Krause Standard Catalog of Sports Memorabilia Price Guide

4.) Robert Connelly-He does clinics on appraisals. He’s a member of the American Society of Appraisers and was honored by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

5.) American Legends-Provides paid appraisals, founded in 1992.

6.) Sports Memorabilia Appraisal Expert Witness-Provides an 800 #, volunteers background information to help give reference to its value as an appraisal business.

Besides the importance of appraisals for resale value, you may want to seriously consider having your valuable insured. Insurance companies also may not recognize the value unless you’ve had an appraisal done. Make sure you have documented proof.

There is a Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice which is recognized in courts and acceptable to banks, insurance companies, auction houses, and the IRS.
Don’t just depend on a local sports shop or whatever available appraisal you come across. Also, consider that paying for more than one opinion is worthwhile if a lot of money is involved and if it gives you peace of mind.
Prices will change, so you’ll want an updated value before decided to sell. Retired players hold their value better because their status won’t change.

Make sure you sell to the right person or business. Just because an item is listed as one amount doesn’t mean the dealer will agree to pay that amount.

Sweat stains don’t necessarily make a jersey authentic. Anyone can wear a jersey long enough to sweat in it and try to pass it off as the real thing. Watch for smudged autographs, dog-eared pages in books, worn edges on cards. An appraiser should be trained to notice small details that would decrease the value of your collector’s item.
There is a system with trading cards called grading. A graded card has a more reasonable guarantee of authenticity. Graded cards are sealed to discourage card switching, a low tactic of some sellers. The appraiser should know to recognize graded cards and their value.

Five Common Sports Injuries

Sports has always been a top-drawer not only for its excitement but also for its numerous health benefits.  These sports activities, however, can also bring risks to one’s health.  Those who engage in contact sports like basketball, football, and the martial arts are usually at high risk of sustaining injuries.  These injuries are usually found on the knees, legs, ankles, and feet — all of which support the entire weight of the athlete’s body.

Acute damage or repetitive stress associated with sports activities may affect the bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Acute sports injuries can be treated with first aid remedies and over the counter muscle relaxants. Chronic injuries, on the other hand, may require medical assistance. Understanding these injuries is essential in preventing its development and avoiding any hindrances to one’s health.

Here are the five most common sports injuries and how to prevent them:

1.Ankle Sprains and Strains
Sprain is the stretching or tearing of the ligaments while strain is the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. Ankle sprains or strains may occur because of poor technique, uneven terrain, and wearing inaapropriate footwear.  Running on smooth and even terrain, running in proper form, and wearing the right foot wear is essential in preventing injury. Wearing orthotic gear may add more stability and balance and prevent re-injury.

2.Shoulder Injury
The shoulder is one of the most flexible joints in the body. Because of its flexibility, the shoulder is essential in many sports activities. Individuals who engage in sports that involve frequent swinging of arms like swimming or basketball are at high risk of developing this injury. Pitchers, tennis players, weightlifters are some of the individuals who may be prone to shoulder injuries.

3.Elbow pain
Lateral epicondylitis also called tennis elbow pain and is one form of overuse injury. It is an inflammation of several structures of the elbow which includes the muscles, tendons, ligaments and many more. People that engage in activities with strenuous or repetitive forearm movement forearm movement have heightened risk of developing this injury. Occupations that include mechanics or carpentry may also pose risks for certain individuals.

4.Knee Pain
Sports related knee pain may be a result of ruptured ligament or torn muscles. Because it is the largest joint in the body, it is one of the most easily damaged joint. An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is one of the most common problem the involves the knee. Medical studies show that many ACL injuries are caused by sports activities that require frequent change in direction, twisting, slowing down when running, or landing from a jump. Individuals who play football, soccer, wrestling, and rugby are prone to this kind of injury. Proper execution of techniques, wearing orthotics, and training in moderation may help prevent the development of this condition.

5.Lower back pain
Many backaches are caused by strains or sprains in the muscles or ligaments. These injuries often occur because of heavy lifting or twisting. Back spasms caused by disk, joint, or muscle injuries may also lead to the development of excruciating pain. In addition to these factors, improper posture, fatigue, and improper alignment may also lead to the development of back pain.

These five common injuries can be prevented by engaging in proper training which includes warm ups, stretches, and cool downs. Warming up and stretching are essential in preparing the body for strenuous activity that can be experienced in training. Cooling down, on the other hand, is essential in reducing the temperature of the muscles and reduce muscle injury, stiffness, and soreness. Using orthotics is also essential in preventing sports injuries. Engaging in proper exercise routines and executing exercise techniques are essential to prevent injuries.  Individuals who want to engage in physical exercise and other strenuous activities should seek the approval of doctors to achieve health goals and avoid fitness obstacles.

Sports Memorabilia

There is a huge interest in sports memorabilia, and sports-related items include signed commemorative photos, baseballs, footballs, basketballs, pucks and jerseys. A Google search of companies hawking these items comes up with almost 5 million businesses!

Some of the items on offer cost thousands of dollars.

Where there are so many eager and gullible customers, fraud is sure to appear. A San  Diego federal judge who recently sentenced several sports autograph forgers to prison said, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of the national pastime, has been undone”. The prosecution stemmed from an FBI investigation called Operation Bullpen, which closed down a professional criminal organization that forged and sold bogus autographs.

60 search warrants were served, more than 2 dozen people arrested, and a warehouse with 10 million dollars worth of forged merchandise was seized. The ring leaders received 3 years in prison and forfeiture or assets to the IRS. Both current and “vintage” items were involved. Any sports fan who has a signed souvenir may now want to question its authenticity.

Phil Halpren, the assistant U.S. attorney who worked to prosecute the forgers stated that fraud is so pervasive in the sports memorabilia market that unless you personally see an item being signed by the athlete, odds are greater than fifty percent that it is fake. The most athletes most well-known the the public are popular with forgers, too. Halpren said, “If you are looking at a Mark McGuire signature, it’s alost a guarantee, 99.9 percent it is a forgery.” Certificates of authenticity can be fabricated just as easily as the collectible item they supposedly validate, so this is no protection.

Vendors are fighting back in an effort to maintain the integrity of the market. Disney, which owns ESPN, will begin next year to auction signed sports memorabilia online. Disney says it will authenticate the signatures with holograms encrypted with the item’s identifying information and package seals, videotaping the entire process.

Sophisticated forgers can even produce holographic seals which appear, on casual inspection, to be real. However most forgers are amateurs, and the more sophisticated the anti-forgery system, the less likely criminals are to attempt to copy it.

Baseball and football are most popular in America, but a few famous hockey players such as Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr are popular targets for forgery as well.

With all the items available, both off and on the internet, fans can avoid a lot of fraud by using common sense. For example, a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth selling for $500 is obviously a fake, because such a price is unbelievably low, too low for real market conditons. Also, it pays to know a little bit about the development of baseballs and pens. If you see baseballs supposedly signed in the ’20s and ’30s with Sharpie pens, these are obviously fake, because these pens were not invented yet in that era. To quote Phil Halpren : “I have seen Babe Ruth balls signed on a Bobby Brown American League President ball. So, you know, he was president in the early ’80s. That’s impossible to have been done. But someone did it.”

So, while it’s enjoyable to own a piece of sports history, the motto to follow is : buyer beware. Unless you are a professional trader who knows how to authenticate merchandise, don’t buy an item strictly for its potential resale value, because you may be disappointed by what you eventually get for it. Buy an item you personally like and intend to keep, and don’t spend thousands of dollars. This ensures that you will be happy when you look at your purchase, without the lingering doubt that you have wasted a large sum of money on something of dubious value.

Choosing a Sports/Fitness Watch

For some reason, sports or fitness watches are usually large and have a rugged appearance.  Even a woman’s sports watch is typically more utilitarian in appearance than a more formal dress style timepiece. Probably the first and foremost consideration when selecting a sports watch is understanding what the purpose of the watch is. You may say that the purpose of choosing a sports watch is because you participate in sports, but that doesn’t necessarily mandate a particular type of watch. In fact, those who participate in the sport of tennis may prefer a watch that appears more like a bracelet than a utilitarian timepiece.

Size

A sports watch will usually be somewhat larger than watches intended for more formal occasions, however, watches in general have grown larger over the past few years. Choosing a sport watch that is not large enough on the face of the watch to easily place and read all the features is a waste of money. At the same time, choosing a large bulky watch can interfere with playing some sports, and can even be dangerous to the player in others. Catching parts of the watch on other objects is hard on the watch and may cause injury to the wearer as well.

Dial

The dial should be large enough to easily read the numbers and view the placement of the hands.  A luminous dial is helpful in some situations. Placement of the hands or the digital readout should be done with readability in mind. If there are other features on the face of the watch, they should be intuitively placed and easily seen. Hands versus display are a matter of personal preference.

Water resistance

Obviously divers, swimmers or those who work in moist weather conditions will want to review the water resistance level in the watch options they are considering. If you are a diver, keep in mind that most sports watches are water resistant to some degree, but you shouldn’t assume that a 50 meter depth watch will be okay at 49 meters.

Materials

Almost all sports watches are made of either stainless steel or titanium. Hardened titanium is beautiful and durable as is stainless steel and much less expensive than watches made of precious metals such as gold or platinum. Gold is easily scratched so would be less desirable for a sports watch. Stainless steel is the preferred choice for most sports watches.

Band composition

The composition of the band typically is metal, leather or synthetic material of some type, such as plastic. You should look for a band that fits your wrist correctly, no matter what the style of the sports watch is or what the composition is. Any watch that is too lose will tend to catch on objects while the wearer is active. A watch band that is too snug will never be comfortable to wear and will tend to rub or chafe the skin of an active wearer.

Crystals

The watch crystal is generally not an option on a sports watch or any other. You will find the harder the substance the better quality the crystal.  Synthetic sapphire is the typical choice, as they are next to diamonds in the hardness scale. Less expensive watches will typically use mineral glass or even plastic. Mineral glass is coated so as to make it more resistant to scratching.

Weight

The weight of a watch for an active sports enthusiast can become critical. If you are wearing a watch that weighs above 100 grams you will begin to feel the weight of the watch on your wrist.  Unfortunately, not all watch manufacturers provide information on the weight of the watch in the specifications.

Quartz vs mechanical

The decision about whether a quartz or mechanical watch is preferable to you is going to be linked to the price you are prepared to spend on the watch. Lower priced and lower quality watches typically will have a quartz movement while higher quality and higher priced watches will nearly always have mechanical movements. The exception may be where the case of the watch is made of a precious metal.

Extras

Some add ons include a stop watch, a calendar and clocks from other time zones or alarms for example, but these items are simply personal preference items.

In summary, finding the perfect sports or fitness watch is a matter of determining how the watch will be used and how it will look and feel on your wrist. Checking the quality level of the watch will be critical unless you are planning to replace the watch periodically. Finally, price of the watch will be an important factor in choosing the ideal sports watch. You may want to think about looking for as quality watch that has been cared for if you want the best quality for the price, but you lose some assurance of the condition of the watch in this instance.

Calvin and Hobbes: A Brief History

Calvin and Hobbes has been one of the most popular comic strips for quite some time now. The story details the adventures of an imaginative young boy named Calvin, and his pet tiger, Hobbes. The comic strip was run in papers from 1985 to 1996 and was printed in over 2400 papers all over the world. Within a year of syndication, the article was being printed in over 250 newspapers, and really took off after it was featured in the Los Angeles Times newspaper in 1987, just 16 months after it was first printed. The cartoon strip earned its cartoonist, Bill Watterson, two Reuben Awards that are given out annually by the National Cartoonists Society, in the category of “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year” in both 1986 and 1988. In total, 3,160 total strips were created and printed up until 1995 when Watterson retired from printing more Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strips. The strips have been complied and printed in a series of 18 books that have sold 30 million copies. There are no more new cartoon strips and Calvin and Hobbes cartoons can only be enjoyed in the books featuring hundreds of cartoon strips.

The Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strips have been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the world. The strips feature the entertaining adventures of a six your old boy and a pet Tiger, which is actually a stuffed animal. The strips feature sledding rides and trips to the beach as well as hundreds of comical jokes that are played on all characters featured in the strips. Most of the strips feature just Calvin and Hobbes; however, there are a number of strips that feature other characters such as Calvin’s parents and Susie Derkins, one of Calvin’s classmates, Moe, a bully at Calvin’s school, Miss Wormwood, Calvin’s teacher, as well as Rosalyn, Calvin’s babysitter. For the most part the strips are realistic; however, there are a few cartoon strips which feature the trip of Calvin and Hobbes into outer space and back to prehistoric times. The Calvin and Hobbes cartoon is one of the most famous in the world and has captivated hundreds of thousands of readers.

Calvin and Hobbes: The Characters

As the title suggests, the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strip features two main characters, Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin is a young six year old imaginative and curious boy who quite often, can be a bit selfish. The story details his adventures with his pet tiger, known as Hobbes. (In reality, Hobbes is just a stuffed animal which resembles a tiger). Hobbes is a more responsible and rational figure in the cartoon; however, he goes along with all of Calvin’s troublemaking schemes and plots. Hobbes can best be described as Calvin’s sidekick in all the adventures presented in the cartoon strip.

Although the bulk of the strips revolve around Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin’s parents, teacher, babysitter, as well as a classmate and the class bully are all present in some scenes. Calvin’s parents are unnamed and referred to only as “Mom” and “Dad”. They resemble the typical American parent, allowing Calvin to use his imagination and play with Hobbes, while still expressing concerns of the safety of their son as well as trying to teach him responsibility and the importance of performing well in school. Calvin’s Teacher is known as Miss. Wormwood and is Calvin’s first grade teacher in every comic strip. She is old and strict and is a heavy smoker just waiting to retire. Calvin’s babysitter, known as Rosalyn, is the only baby sitter who puts up with Calvin’s mischievous behaviour and thus uses the grief of having to deal with these antics as justification for raises in pay. Susie Derkins is one of Calvin’s first grade classmates and a close neighbour. She is a very intelligent girl who gets perfect grades. Calvin and Susie are traditional first grade boy-girl enemies and Calvin plays many practical jokes on Susie. Underneath this relationship, it is suspected that Calvin may have a crush on Susie. Finally, the last character which is presented in this comic strip is Moe, the class bully who is often regarded as the only first grader who has to shave. He is the traditional school bully taking Calvin’s money and lunches and constantly shoving him and dropping his books.
